HLAA Position Opening: Director of Chapter Development

HLAA POSITION OPENING: DIRECTOR OF CHAPTER DEVELOPMENT
 
The director of chapter development is responsible for providing the leaders of HLAA Chapters with the direction and support they need to effectively deliver the HLAA mission to their members and respective communities.
 
Job Summary:
The director of chapter development role is to provide chapter leaders with the direction and support to sustain healthy chapters with growing HLAA memberships. The position’s primary focus is to help leaders deliver effective programs for information, education, support and advocacy to open the world of communication for their members and community. A key component of job is to train leaders with the skills that they need to attract other leaders, volunteers, funders and community partnerships, as well as to maintain their chapter’s tax-exempt status, and to ensure a sustainable presence.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Strategic Direction and Leadership
 
  • Provide chapter leaders with the direction, program options and support to deliver the HLAA mission to their members and community. 
  • Provide the direction, tools and support for state chapter coordinators to serve as the primary link between HLAA‘s resources and chapter leaders needs.  

Communications

  • Provide chapter leaders with the direction for effective information, education, advocacy and support programs geared to their members and local community’s needs. 
  • Guide chapters on how to deliver HLAA branding strategy in all communications.
  • Clarify how chapters maintain their tax-exempt status by meeting IRS and state requirements for a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.
  • Ensure all chapters provide annual Chapter Updates and maintain up-to-date chapter contact information on the HLAA website.
  • Provide chapters with complete information and guidance on the Unified Membership Program. 
  • Develop and manage a Leaders Workshop Track for the annual HLAA Convention that encourages all chapter leaders to attend.
  • Advise chapter leaders on how to address the social support needs of members within regular chapter meetings and/or events.
  • Attract new leaders to open new chapters in areas currently without an HLAA Chapter.
  • Help attract new state chapter coordinator candidates to replace retiring coordinator and to expand state coordinator support to states/ regions currently without any HLAA state presence.
Training 
 
  • Provide established chapter leaders with direction on how to manage effective chapter meetings, events and member activities to better deliver the HLAA mission.
  • Provide new leaders with basic orientation on their role in delivering HLAA mission.
  • Advise/support state chapter coordinators with individual/joint training sessions to guide chapter leaders.
  • Advise leaders on how to attract and mange other leaders and volunteers. 
  • Guide leaders on how to fundraise to better support their members and chapter needs.
  • Mentor chapters on how to build awareness and involvement in the community to drive meeting attendance and/or memberships.
  • Advise chapters on how to advocate for communication access in the community.
Administration
 
  • Maintain HLAA records with up-to-date contact information for all chapter officers, committee heads, meeting locations, EIN, tax-exempt status, and more.
  • Ensure chapter’s latest contact information is corret on hearingloss.org. 
  • Execute chapter/National agreements for new chapters and chapters who join the Unified Membership Program. This includes processing all Unified Membership Agreements to ensure chapters meet all requirements and are given proper materials and direction to execute.
  • Guide chapters on how to secure/maintain EIN, 501(c)(3) nonprofit status plus IRS and state tax-exempt status. 
  • Confirm that all chapters participating in the Walk4Hearing have maintained their tax-exempt status.
  • Confirm all list use requests meet chapter’s approved territory.
  • Provide updates on chapter strategy and developments as required for Board of Trustee reports.
Qualifications:
 
  • Proven managerial experience in a nonprofit environment is essential. 
  • Must motivate and guide leaders who are volunteers and in many cases have no management or organizational experience, on how to attract and manage other volunteers for their chapter to be successful. 
  • Proven program management and leadership training skills are required.
  • Must be comfortable working in a close-knit, team environment where attitude and work ethic matters
  • Must have knowledge about hearing loss issues, support groups, and peer-to-peer counseling.
  • Highly organized.
  • High proficiency with MS-Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Comfortable working with association database (e.g., Raisers Edge).
Education and Experience:
 
Bachelor’s degree and related experience in a nonprofit organization.
 
Work Environment:
 
The job requires teamwork with most of the staff in a normal office setting. Most direction and support to chapter leaders is provided via email blasts and individual follow-ups to leaders’ questions or requests. Training provided in Skype/phone meeting or in-person workshops at chapter/state locations. Many meetings require communication strategies, communication access support and patience to effectively connect with those with hearing loss. Travel to chapter meetings, workshops, annual HLAA Convention is required. Travel is estimated to be about 20% of time. 
 
Supervisory Responsibilities:
 
There are no HLAA staff positions directly reporting to the director of chapter development. The primary supervisory role is to act as a personal coach, mentor and advisor for all chapter leaders and state coordinators.
